Lyrics Hit the Mark

Our student praise band played this song in chapel Wednesday. And even though I have heard it on the radio many times, the clarity of the message in the lyrics struck me as I sang along with the kids.

“Before I spoke a word, You were singing over me
You have been so, so good to me
Before I took a breath, You breathed Your life in me
You have been so, so kind to me”

God has known each child from before they were born and even conceived. Every child, every person, is of great value to God.

“When I was Your foe, still Your love fought for me
You have been so, so good to me
When I felt no worth, You paid it all for me
You have been so, so kind to me”

Our natural condition is to rebel against God.

When confronted with our shortcomings, our natural response is to give up and sink to despair.

But God steps in and says, “I’ve got this.”

“Oh, the overwhelming, never-ending, reckless love of God
Oh, it chases me down, fights ’til I’m found, leaves the ninety-nine
And I couldn’t earn it, and I don’t deserve it, still, You give Yourself away
Oh, the overwhelming, never-ending, reckless love of God.”

Love that is beyond our understanding

Love that is timeless and unconditional

Love that does not wait for us to come to Him

Love that seeks us out, like the shepherd who leaves the flock to find the lost sheep.

There is nothing we can do to make ourselves worthy.

Our sin puts our account with God in the red.

And, yet, God does the craziest thing. He has His Son take our place and pay the debt we owe. That is reckless love.
